Why Falun Gong is a cult?

Li Hongzhi, the founder of Falun Gong, boasts to be the sovereign Savior.

The Introduction to Li Hongzhi compiled by the Falun Gong organization states: "At age 8, Li Hongzhi learned the essence of Buddhism and attained the supernatural powers of telekinesis, the ability to mend things, control thinking and the ability to become invisible...He understands the truth of the universe; has insights into life and can see both the past and future." Li Hongzhi claimed in his major work Zhuan Falun that he has "an extremely powerful gong," called "the Great Soul-Catching Method" which "can pull out a person's whole master soul."

Li Hongzhi said, "I have truly done something that no one ever did in the past by teaching a greater fundamental Dafa (great law) of the universe." "However, as for these theories, you may have either read all the books in the world or studied all the subjects on earth, you still cannot acquire them."(Lecture in Sydney – Editor's notes: Quotations below all come from Li Hongzhi's works unless otherwise specified)

Li claims to be the sovereign God whose Fa powers are thousands of times stronger than that of Sakyamuni and Jesus Christ; and Falun Gong is the only upright Fofa that can "bring people to Paradise." He said he "has done something nobody did in the past," and "has taught people the more powerful Fa of the universe," "has left man a ladder to heaven – Zhuan Falun."

"Right now I'm the only person in the world who is publicly spreading a true teaching. I have done something that's never been done by anyone before." (Zhuan Falun)

"You shouldn't call a student (a disciple) who spreads Falun Dafa 'teacher,' or 'master,' or whatnot. There's only one master (Li Hongzhi – editor's notes) in Dafa. It doesn't matter how early on someone took up the practice, he's still a disciple." (Zhuan Falun)

Li Hongzhi claims that he can "remake" any species on earth and even create a new earth. "What I do today is for the purpose of rectifying humankind and the substances of the entire earth – I can do all of this." Li further explains, "How can the earth be preserved? Just as with your practice of cultivation, as your bodies are being transformed, so is the new earth being made."(Teaching the Fa at the first Fa Conference in North America)

Li says, "While I just sit here I can see things in Beijing, things in the United States, or things on the other side of the world. Some people can not understand all this, from the science point of view they can not understand...In that field's dimension, at a person's forehead there's a mirror, and for people who don't practice Qigong it faces away from them, while for people who do practice Qigong it's turned toward them. When a person's Remote Vision is about to come out it starts spinning." (Zhuan Falun)

In March 2002, Li Hongzhi said in Touring North America to Teach the Fa that: "No matter how large the cosmos is, it's still not as large as I am." "(Perhaps) when the cosmos is no more, only I am there." "No being knows who I am; I do not know who I am." "Yet without me, the cosmos wouldn't exist."

He claimed: "I have numerous Fashen who look the same as me. They are in another dimension, so of course they can become large or small. They can become very large or very small." (Lecture in Sydney)

He even said: "Each word in this book (Zhuan Falun) has my Fashen, every word is the image of my Fashen and every word is the image of a Buddha. I have numerous Fashen, which cannot be calculated by numbers...No matter how many people there are, I can take care of all of them, and I can take care of the entire mankind." (Lecture in Sydney)

Li Hongzhi concocts a set of cultic doctrines to take followers in and swindles money out of them by exercising spiritual control.

At the inception, Li Hongzhi collected money by ways of teaching people Qigong and "sending out Gong to cure diseases" – claiming he could help patients by removing their sickness with his "magical power." Li charged a fee for the treatment at a rate of dozens yuan to hundreds yuan if the patient wanted Li to "send out Gong" for him alone. Li also held training seminars, a ticket for such seminars was sold at the price of RMB 30 to 50. Altogether Li held in Mainland China 56 terms of the "Fa teaching classes" or "training seminars," collecting a total sum of RMB 2,840,000 plus.

Later on, Li's "magical power" frequently failed to show any effects, so he demanded his followers pay more attention to "study the Fa" or to read his books, and promised that by "studying the Fa" his followers could improve health and even become gods or Buddhas. Before the official ban on Falun Gong in July 1997, Li Hongzhi illegally published 21 kinds of pamphlets and books similar to Zhuan Falun which was described as "guidance to practitioners in their cultivation." The bulk of Li Hongzhi's adherents bought all 21 of his books, along with their meagerly revised editions. In addition, pictures of Li Hongzhi, video and audio tapes of Li's lectures, and event the meditation mats that in connection with the worship of Li, were all recommended to Falun Gong practitioners. According to statistics, the average cost for each practitioner to buy books and articles mentioned-above was over 300 yuan.

According to police source, from 1992 to 1999 and in the name of "Falun Dafa Research Society," Li Hongzhi and his cultic organization edited, published and marketed a tremendous amount of Falun Gong publications and relevant articles. A total of RMB 135,000,000 was collected and the net profit amounted to RMB 42,290,000.

These excluded the donation. Obsessed Falun Gong followers donated an awful of money to Li Hongzhi, not to the organization.

Falun Gong commits monstrous crimes in violation of human rights in Mainland China.

Incomplete statistics indicate that, by April 12, 2000, there were 2,365 Falun Gong practitioners who have turned themselves into victims of the cult as a result of their crazing for Falun Gong: 1,559 of them died of suicide or rejecting medical treatment; 651 suffered from mental disorders; 11 killed others; and 144 became disabled.

On January 23, 2001, seven Falun Gong practitioners, at the request of Li Hongzhi that "let go of life and death," set themselves on fire at the Tian'anmen Square, resulted in two deaths and three disabled because of serious injuries.

From May 25 to June 27, 2003, an obsessed Falun Gong follower named Chen Fuzhao killed 16 people with rat toxicant in order to "enhance his Gong powers." Of all the victims, 15 were junkmen or beggars, and one was a Buddhist.

Falun Gong illegally attacks people who hold different views.

From June 1 to 3, 1998, the Qilu Evening News press in Shandong Province was illegally besieged by over 3,000 Falun Gong practitioners because the newspaper had published "Take a Look at What's Going on with Falun Gong" and other two articles exposing the cult.

According to incomplete statistics, before the official ban on Falun Gong in July 1999, dozens of media organizations came under organized attacks by Falun Gong practitioners because they published articles or put on programs exposing and denouncing Falun Gong. These media organizations included: Guangming Daily, Beijing TV Station, Liaoning Daily, Nanfang Daily, China Youth Daily, Health News Digest, Fuzhou Daily, Xiamen Daily, Qilu Evening News, Hefei Evening News, Chongqing Daily, Chengdu Business Review, Cangzhou Daily, Science Review for Juvenile, and Qiantang Evening News etc.

Today, over 50,000 people including celebrities from scientific and religious circles like Zhuang Fenggan, Pan Jiazheng, Fu Tieshan and Sheng Hui are all blacklisted on Falun Gong websites.

In addition, Falun Gong established a special organization called "World Organization to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong" or WOIPFG, systematically harassed or threatened people and organizations which supported the ban on Falun Gong or those simply expressed different opinions. Main targets of WOIPFG included Chinese government officials at all levels, religious circles such as China Buddhist Association and China Islamic Association, media and their journalists from Xinhua News Agency and Phoenix TV station, etc. Popular figures such as singer Li Guyi, actors Zhao Benshan, Fan Wei and late actress Gao Xiumin were also blacklisted. Famous companies such as Yahoo, Google, Microsoft, and the European Communication Satellite Corporation were all under its attacks. Even judges from Singapore were also harassed by WOIPFG, their personal safety under threats.

The religious circles declare Falun Gong to be a cult.

The international Buddhist circles firmly believe that Falun Gong is a cult.

On May 19, 2000, the United International World Buddhism Association Headquarters held a World Forum on Buddhism, Buddhist Studies and Buddha Dharma Uprightness in Taiwan. The Forum determined Li Hongzhi was a preacher of cult, and the so-called doctrine of Li Hongzhi out and out was a cult.

In April 2006, the 23rd Conference of the World Fellowship of Buddhists (WFB) held in Taiwan passed "Ten Declarations" which clearly included the following "Stick to the upright religions. Oppose Falun Gong which damages Buddhism by pirating the term Falun (Wheel of Law)." The Conference also called on Buddhists around the world to "face up to and denounce the cult Falun Gong jointly."

On May 10, 2006, the International Day of Vesak World Buddhist Conference (UNDV) held in Thailand reiterated in the joint communique: "The Conference confirms that Falun Gong contradicts the basic doctrine of Buddhism."

In addition to the Buddhist circle, the Christianity, Catholicism and Taoism, etc, all condemn Falun Gong.

In 2007, the Christian magazine Church and Heresy in South Korean published three journals consecutively, declaring Falun Gong to be a cult. The magazine pointed out that Falun Gong was a non-belief cult much more dangerous than any other criminal organizations.

Facts proved time and again that the Falun Gong organization, headed by Li Hongzhi, was an anti-science, anti-humanity and anti-society cult through and though. It deified Li Hongzhi and repelled other religions, spread cultic heresies and brought harm to society, much viciouser than any other cults outside China.

The international cultic study experts declare Falun Gong to be a cult.

Margaret Thaler Singer, former president of American Psychological Association (APS), psychology professor at the University of California, Berkeley, thought Falun Gong surely meets the criteria of being a cult by American or world standards. The leader has people instead of worshiping God or abstract principles, they worship him. It makes Falun Gong visible as these years, one more of them, thousands of cults.

In December 2001, Herbert Rosedale, president of American Family Foundation (AFF) made a speech at the annual academic meeting of China Association for Cultic Studies held in Beijing, declaring Falun Gong to be a cult.

Professor Bergin, head of the Russian National Research Institute of Religious Relation and Law, says that Falun Gong's attitude toward the Chinese government and other religious groups, its imputation and impact on traditional religious values, as well as what Falun Gong had done against himself, made him firmly believe that Falun Gong was an extreme cult organization.

Professor Alexander Dvorkin, president of the Russian Association of Religious and Cultic Studies Centers, thinks Falun Gong now is a worldwide cult group under the leadership of Li Hongzhi, headquartered in New York. It is not important where the Falun Gong practitioners live, for instance in China, France, the United States or other countries. As far as the Falun Gong practitioners are concerned, they do not belong to any country, they all belong to Falun Gong group.

An international roundtable "Information Extremism: The Truth and Falsehood of Falun Gong Cult" held on October 13 to 14, 2008, in Kiev, Ukraine. More than 30 scholars or representatives from seven countries, comprising the United States, Austria, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova and China, analyzed, appraised and verified the character and salient features of the Falun Gong cult as well as grave harms it had done to society and people from such aspects as theology, the science of law, political science, psychology, sociology and the science of information transmission. Participants were unanimous in the view that the Falun Gong is a well-organized evil cult with great destructive power, which has wrought havocs to society and general public; it is a cult organization with an intrinsic tendency of potential violence.
