BEIJING, Sept. 3 -- Tibet's GDP soared from 174 million yuan in 1959 to 39.591 billion yuan in 2008 with the per capita GNP hitting 13,861 yuan, said Padma Tsinle, executive vice chairman of the Tibet Autonomous Regional Government on Tuesday.
Padma Tsinle made the announcement at a press conference sponsored by the State Council Information Office on the great achievements made by China's five autonmous regions, i.e., Tibet Autonomous Region, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Uygur Autonomous Region, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.
The GDP in Tibet is 65 times higher than that 50 years ago, said Padma Tsinle.
The average life expectancy in Tibet has increased to 67 years from 35.5 recorded before Tibet's peaceful liberation in 1951. Tibet now has a population of 2.87 million.
In 2008, the per-capita net income of rural Tibetans came to 3,176 yuan and the per-capita disposable income for urban citizens went up to 12,482 yuan.
With the support of China's Central Government and aid from other parts of the country, Tibet has been making great headway in social, economic, educational and environmental areas.
