More rural Tibetans to enjoy better housing conditions in 2010

BEIJING, May 4 (Xinhuanet) -- A total of 274,800 rural families in Tibet will have been able to enjoy better housing conditions by the end of this year, according to Tibet's Regional Department of Finance.

Tibet will spend an extra 470 million yuan (68.86 million U.S. dollars) on housing projects for another 43,000 rural families in Xigaze, Shannan, Qamdo and Nagqu prefectures.

Meanwhile, the department will also allot 220 million yuan for these projects to improve the houses' quake-resistance capability, with 5,000 yuan for each household.

Moreover, Tibet plans to allocate 4.23 billion yuan to upgrade supporting infrastructure in rural areas, that is, to make electricity, roads, tap water, telecommunication, postal service, radio and television accessible to farmers and herders.

The region had made investment of 5.15 billion yuan by the end of 2009, making electricity, roads and telecommunication available to 266,000 people, 51 townships and 916 villages, respectively. The coverage of radio and television reached 89.2 and 90.36, respectively.
